3 years back, at the age of 21, Sangeeta was having a dream run. Her long time boyfriend proposed her and after some resistance from her parents, she finally got married. But destiny had some other plans for her. Six months after her marriage, she felt a lump in her breast. An examination followed by tests confirmed the fears. She was to fight an advance stage breast cancer. But the worst was yet to come.
Her husband eloped when he came to know that she will have to go through mastectomy followed by expensive and painful dose of radiation and chemotherapy. Nether she, nor her parents had funds to support treatment. But as we always say, “Cancer is a beautiful disease… it changes one’s perspective towards life…” Sangeeta decided to fight a lone battle. She travelled 40 kms regularly and all alone from Faridabad to Delhi State Cancer Institute for complete her treatment.
We met Sangeeta at AIIMS where she approached us for a prosthetic bra. She had no means of survival and was still going through her maintenance therapy. Looking at her grit and determination, we offered her a role at Win Over Cancer which she readily accepted.
It has been one year now. Sangeeta is a regular volunteer with Win Over Cancer counselling hundreds of fellow breast cancer survivors every month. She has already attained financial independence working with Win Over Cancer. She is honing her skills doing a computer course from an affiliated centre. She has decided to take her betrayed lover/ husband heads on and has filed a case for divorce. Sangeeta is a true winner!
