Win Over Cancer was conceptualized and formed inside a hospital room by Arun Gupta, a chartered accountant and a cancer fighter. He held a strong belief that cancer is something which impacts the entire family and therefore, he had in mind that the work taken up by Win Over Cancer should be inclusive of not only the cancer impacted patient, but the entire family as well.
The journey began in 2011 when our founder Mr. Arun Gupta was accidentally diagnosed with Chronic Lymphotic Leukemia or CLL. It is a slow growing, but difficult to treat blood cancer. This was going to change his life forever and lay the foundations of our organization.
Since it was a slow growing cancer it gave him time to understand the disease and life during and after the treatment. By joining various cancer forums, he got to interact with uncountable cancer fighters and survivors. During these interactions, he realized that most of them had common issues and many of them had a solution. Therefore, he began counseling patients and families and eventually started writing a blog named Win Over Cancer, which later grew into a fully
fledged Non-Profit Organization.
One of the bigger after math of cancer is the financial instability it creates for the patient’s family. Many patients that he spoke to during his treatment had lost their jobs and the means of restoring them were minimal. Moreover, most of the savings and assets had been exhausted during the long and expensive treatment. The suffering in the present and the uncertainty for their future, drove Win Over Cancer to design its work and programs accordingly.
The next three years were spent designing and piloting programs for cancer fighters and their families. These programs ranged from awareness campaigns, health talks, early detection camps, to financial support and rehabilitation, counseling, expert advice and lastly, the production and free distribution of Win Over Cancer’s unique breast prosthesis (Approved by AIIMS CMC Vellore and eleven Government Hospitals) to breast cancer patients who have undergone mastectomy.
During this period, our founder was diagnosed with Richter’s Transformation along with CLL and this gave him only a 10% chance of survival. But instead of losing hope and giving up, he fought it bravely and worked endlessly even during his treatment for Win Over Cancer’s work. Seven years down the line, we have 11 running programs in our organization which are grouped under our three major divisions; Save, Support and Survive, which is run dedicatedly by our growing team of staff members and volunteers. Our beneficiaries are spread all across the country and our work has been recognized nationally and Internationally, with many accolades and recognition to our foundation.
Nevertheless, we still have a long way to go and much more work to do for people and families who are suffering because of the disease and we endeavor to support them through the entire journey.
